Back for a limited time at the DermaSpa, the Pumpkin Peel!

Exfoliation is a very important step to proper skin care that removes dead skin cells and signals our body to product new ones. The Pumpkin Peel treatment, created by Dr. Asarch, will accomplish that as well as offer other incredible benefits. We have a variety of peels designed to lighten and brighten skin, diminish and soften fine lines, improve the appearance of enlarged pores and minimize breakouts.
The Pumpkin Peel is a mix of concentrated enzymes and fruit acids. Enzymes are safe and effective organic proteins that exfoliate by digesting the dead cells at the surface of your skin. Fruit acids are nontoxic organic substances that help reduce dead skin build up as well as loosen follicle impactions (often referred to as clogged pores).

New Data on Parabens Suggests Not Adverse Hormonal Effect on the Body

While parabens have been used safely and effectively in skin care products for more than 70 years, the potential harmful effects of preservatives in products, including parabens, has come under scrutiny lately.

One concern is how people use the skin care products containing parabens. Once you add water to any skin care formula, it must be preserved to prevent it from becoming infected with bacteria. Although it could look okay and smell okay, it still could be full of bacteria and if you were to apply it to your skin, you run the risk of a serious infection. Parabens act as a preservative preventing contamination and bacterial overgrowth.

Also of concern is the possible estrogenic effect of parabens applied to the skin. A recent study confirmed that regardless of what paraben is applied on the skin, any that is absorbed fully metabolized before entering the blood stream. The metabolized or breakdown product, p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), is not known to have estrogenic effect. In short, parabens applied to the skin are metabolized rapidly and do not exhibit any adverse effects. It has also been shown that PHBA is a necessary building block for co-enzyme Q, an essential enzyme which is found in the heart muscle and skin.

Although extensive research has gone into searching for a natural preservative, one as effective as parabens has not been found. Parabens used in cosmetics are chemically identical to parabens in nature. In the plant world, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid and its derivatives are commonly found in various vegetables such as barley (meaning parabens are found in bread), strawberries, blackcurrants, peaches, carrots, onions, cocoa beans, vanilla, corn and flax seed oils. Additionally, parabens are found in foods prepared using fruit juices, grapes, yeast extract, wine vinegar and cheeses. In an article in the
Journal of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, food accounts for about 10 times the exposure to parabens than the average skin care and cosmetic product usage.

Acne - Using Light Treatments

Topical and oral medications have been the mainstay of acne treatments for decades. Now, patients suffering from acne can benefit from in-office treatments of intense pulsed light treatments as an alternative or in addition to traditional acne medications.

A major effect of both oral and topical antibiotics and the Starlux light treatment is the same. Prescribed oral and topical antibiotics rid the skin of acne-causing bacteria. The Starlux system in our office uses blue-light (wavelength of 405-420nm) to remove acne causing bacteria on the skin.

Bacteria produce a light-sensitive chemical called porphyrins. The intense light from the Starlux system interacts with this chemical to destroy the bacteria.

Open clinical trials have shown this treatment to be effective in the majority of patients. Many people will respond after only a couple of sessions. The treatment is safe and can be repeated as often as necessary to keep acne under control. O

Considering a Tropical Vacation?

Two recent studies have shown a link between warm weather vacations and the development of a greater number of moles in children and Caucasian women. A report in Journal of Investigative Dermatology showed that Caucasian English women who vacation in hot countries have 74% more moles than those who have never vacationed in tropical climates. The same study showed that women between the ages of 18 - 29 who vacationed in tropical climates were more likely to have moles on the trunk and limbs, areas that are most often covered in the everyday life.

A study involving seven-year-old Caucasian children in Colorado showed that every vacation near the water was associated with a 5% increase in small moles. Sunny vacations by the water were most closely linked to increases in small moles.

Since a greater number of moles can increase the risk of developing melanoma, these findings are another fact that emphasizes the importance of following sun precaution rules: (1) Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, (2) apply at least 1 ounce 30 minutes prior to sun exposure, (3) apply sunscreen every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating profusely, (4) wear sun-protective clothing especially when intense mid day sun exposure is likely, (5) avoid intense sun times from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and, (6) remember that tanning and UV tanning and UV tanning booths are not safe.

6. Sunscreen ingredients fall into two categories: chemical and physical. Chemical blockers absorb the ultraviolet rays and prevent cell damage while physical blockers reflect the sun's rays away from the skin. The two physical blockers are:

7. SPF only refers to UVB ray protection, but ultraviolet A ray (UVA) exposure is also damaging to your skin. In order to protect against UVA rays, the following ingredients should be in your sunscreen:

c. Padimate O, homosalate, octyl methoxycinnamate

8. If you have brown spots or pigment discoloration problems in sun-exposed areas, it is essential for you to choose a sunscreen that has a high SPF plus:
a. Protects against UVB
b. Protects against UVA and UVB
c. Protects against UVA

9. Using a water-resistent sunscreen while in the water or while performing an activity that makes you sweat profusely, requires that you:
a. Reapply every 90-120 minutes
b. Not necessary to reapply
c. Reapply immediately after swimming, towel drying or heavy sweating

10. Shad and protective clothing is advocated for protection of babies. Use of sunscreen on babies should not be used on babies:
a. Under 3 months of age
