Botox Injections - Facial Lines from Repeated Expressions

Deep facial lines begin as temporary creases where muscles make favorite expressions over and over. Over time, the underlying collagen develops a memory of this crease. Your skin’s loss of elasticity prevents it from returning to its smooth resting position.

Botox can prevent these unwanted lines as well as smooth the ones you already have.

Facts about Botox:
1. Botox is a potent neurotoxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.

2. The toxin inhibits the release of acetyl choline at nerve endings, paralyzing the treated facial muscles. This prevents you from making unwanted expression.

3. You will usually notice the results in two to six days. The effects slowly wear off over three to six months.

4. The dose and the location of injections may vary slightly from person to person.

5. Botox injections pose no permanent risks. However, sometimes additional muscles in the vicinity of the injections may accidently relax, too. This wears off quickly since very little Botox reaches these muscles.

a. Eyelids can get droopy if Botox reaches the tiny muscle that lifts the eyelid. If this happens remember that it will not affect your eye. The “lazy” eyelid usually returns to normal in a few days but might last a few weeks. Your doctor can often counter act the problem by prescribing a medication to apply to the affected eye.
b. If too much Botox acts on the lower part of the forehead muscle, your brow can droop. Wait a few weeks for it to wear off, or contact your doctor. Sometimes your doctor can inject small amounts of Botox around the brow to minimize this until the Botox gradually wears off.

6. If you take the following medications, notify your physician before having Botox injected: Aminoglycosides, penicillamine, quinine and calcium beta blockers. They can affect the amount of Botox required.

Your AGE's Can Be Found in Your Diet

"You are what you eat" is built on sound science. What you consume plays a role in free radical formation, inflammation and Advanced Glycosylation End-products (AGE's).

Our bodies have a natural ability to resist and repair damage by utilizing enzymes and antioxidants. Yet, the ability to fight off free radicals and contain inflammation declines as we age. Replenishing our levels of antioxidants with nutrition is critical to the skin's health and appearance. Antioxidants come in many forms - vitamins, minerals, photochemicals, enzymes and other substances. The function of antioxidants is to block harmful free radicals.

Our body requires two essential fatty acids: omega-3 (linolenic acid) and omega-6 (linoleic acid). They are called essential because our bodies cannot produce them and, therefore, must be provides by our diet. Both are necessary for the development and maintenance of a healthy body.

Omega-6 fatty acid sources are plentiful, especially in processed foods utilizing hydrogenated oils. Sources of omega-3 are more limited, the best sources being cold-water fish, especially salmon, mackerel, tuna, sea bass, cod and sardines plus plants that include canola. The optimal dietary intake ration which promotes healthy skin and minimizes inflammation is 4:1, four parts omega-6 to one part omega-3. Unfortunately, our western consumption style can skew this ratio to 20:1 or higher which can lead to inflammation and skin damage.

Blood glucose is a crucial component for all of normal metabolism. Too much or too high a blood glucose combines with protein (am amino acid) to form an unstable byproduct that slowly transforms into Advanced Glycosylation End-products (AGE's). Many of these AGE's are able to cross-link with adjacent proteins causing impairment of enzyme systems, limiting cellular repair and increase inflammatory components in the skin. Lowering blood glucose levels is an effective way to reduce the formation of AGE's.

The basic components in a healthy diet depend on the quality of the foods you choose. The four major factors to weigh when choosing what foods to eat or what recipe to prepare are calories, protein, carbohydrates and fats. Not all carbohydrates, proteins or fats are equal in their nutritional values.

Photo Rejuvenation for Sun Damage

A Photofacial delivered by Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), is a non-invasive technique to improve the appearance of skin. Called Photorejuvenation, IPL is able to penetrate to the necessary levels of the skin while leaving the superficial aspect of the skin untouched.

At the Asarch Center DermaSpa, the Palomar Starlux Photofacial is used to rejuvenate the face, neck, chest, hands and other areas of the body. The Starlux effectively clears vascular and pigmented lesions - age spots, discolorations, rosacea, facial blood vessels and other imperfections. The Intense Pulse Light targets hemoglobin (for vascular lesions) and melanin (for pigmented lesions) and the thermal effect of IPL simultaneously stimulates production of new collagen thereby diminishing wrinkles.

A series of treatments directing intense pulses of light at the skin's surface also improves skin tone and texture. A topical anesthetic is often used making the procedure essentially painless. Make up can be applied immediately after a treatment allowing you to return directly to routine activities. Since the treated areas can be more sensitive to the sun for a few days, it is best to avoid intense sun exposure during that time.

Most patients see the maximum benefit with a series of four to six treatments performed every three to four weeks. Maintenance treatments also may be recommended every six months depending on the area(s) treated and your individual skin type.

In order for this pigment to be produced, the inactive form of melanin has to be converted to the active form. Activation of this converting enzyme, tyrosinase, is triggered by ultraviolet light exposure which then results in a series of chemical reactions leading to pigment formation.
